COURSE 1. Parental Involvement - This session addresses parent involvement in the education of children. It reviews all parental notification requirements of Title III and gives educators a variety of tactics proven to increase parent involvement and awareness in the schools.
COURSE 2. Cultural Sensitivity - This session addresses an issue unfamiliar to many educators; that of cultural sensitivity. The presenter, having lived in a variety of Middle Eastern, Eastern and Western European cultures, shares with the viewers the sensations and manifestations of culture shock, the process of acculturation, and several activities developed for the purpose of sensitizing school personnel to value other cultures and languages.
COURSE 3. Instructional Strategies - This session provides valuable content and skills-training necessary for working with non-native English speakers in the classroom. It gives the viewers tactics to modify both lessons and the delivery of lessons in order for the language-minority student to understand the topic, tasks and objectives of the class. These skills cross the curriculum and may be used in all content areas: Math, Science, Social Studies, and English.
This three-part "Educating the Limited-English Proficient Child," online professional development series includes three video segments denoting parental involvement, cultural diversity, and instructional strategies for working with non-native English speakers in the classroom. Each course includes a web link for PDF course handouts, content assessments with mastery level tracking established as eighty percent, a discussion board topic opportunity to facilitate collaborative online opportunities, and a course survey to evaluate effectiveness.
